Jonathan Simpson

Senior Modeller

BEng (Hons) MCIWEM

Jonathan Simpson

I am a Member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and I’ve been working in the flood risk and water management sector since 2018, developing expertise in hydraulic modelling, flood risk assessment, and sustainable drainage design. My background combines practical site investigation experience with advanced technical modelling, allowing me to deliver realistic and robust solutions for complex flood risk challenges. Since joining Aegaea in early 2026, I have delivered Flood Risk Assessments and robust hydraulic models, and have fostered Client relations.

How I can help you

  • Hydraulic Modelling Expertise: I specialise in 1D, 2D, Rain-on-Grid, and tidal hydraulic modelling using software including HEC-RAS, MIKE11, Causeway Flow, Flood Modeller, and TUFLOW.
  • Flood Risk Assessments & Drainage Strategies: I provide Flood Risk Assessments and SuDS designs for a wide range of developments in Scotland, ensuring compliance with local authorities, SEPA, and Scottish Water requirements.
  • Technical Problem Solving: From complex catchment interactions to challenging flood mechanisms, I enjoy finding efficient and defensible technical solutions that support project delivery.
  • Project Management: I oversee projects from initial scoping through to final reporting.

Expertise in action

  • Unlocking Dream Home Potential (Dumfries & Galloway): A rural development involved a family home, residential dwelling, and the proposed extension of the home over an adjacent mountain stream. The project required a detailed hydraulic model to ascertain if the existing home or extension were at risk of flooding, and what impact, if any, the extension might have on the watercourse. I developed a hydraulic model to allow the family to create their dream home by successfully modelling and assessing that the existing house and extension were not at risk of flooding. This has allowed them to progress their application to build a lovely breakfast bar extension over the small mountain stream without obstructing the flow of the water. Jonny Simpson Project 1

  • Retrospective Assessment (Highlands): A Client had expanded his holiday accommodation spot in the Highlands. The updated Surface Water and Small Watercourses flood mapping produced by SEPA showed the holiday accommodation to be within the zone of flood likelihood from several nearby mountain watercourses. I developed a hydraulic model and delivered the Flood Risk Assessment which confirmed that the holiday accommodation was not at risk of flooding from the watercourses. Only the bespoke and in-depth modelling of the channels was sufficient to accurately portray the actual flow mechanisms of the watercourses. Analysis like this continues to prove that despite the improvements to the national scale mapping produced by SEPA, the EA and others, site-specific modelling and Flood Risk Assessments are still necessary. • Opening Commercial Premises (Greater Glasgow): I wrote and delivered a Flood Risk Assessment that opened a site within an industrial estate for commercial development. My experience of Glasgow City Council’s requirements and what they look for in a Flood Risk Assessment proved invaluable in delivering an FRA to support the development and to ensure it has the best chance of getting across the line without the need for hydraulic modelling or rewrites.
