Bespoke Flood Model Builds

A bespoke flood model is a hydraulic model built specifically for your site, rather than relying on national or strategic-scale mapping. You need one where the existing model is too coarse to assess a small site, where no model of the nearby watercourse exists, or where the Local Planning Authority or Environment Agency has asked for a modelling exercise.

Aegaea has been building flood models since 2012, using TUFLOW, Flood Modeller and ESTRY in the UK and HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS internationally, for developers, consultancies and government bodies.

What Is A Bespoke Flood Model?

A bespoke flood model is a hydraulic model tailored to assess risk specifically for your site. This may be required in areas where the existing hydraulic model is at a strategic scale and, therefore, unsuitable for assessing small sites or where a hydraulic model of a nearby watercourse is not available. You may have been asked by the Local Planning Authority or the Environment Agency to undertake a hydraulic modelling exercise, or you may be looking for a pragmatic approach to mitigating risk and increasing development potential.

How Bespoke Flood Models Improve The Value Of Your Development

Understanding the flood risk to your site early in the project will enable you to maximise the development potential. Strategic scale models may overestimate flood risk as they may not include small-scale topographical features that could protect your site from flood water. Early utilisation of a flood model can help prevent abortive work caused by flood extents being different than originally anticipated.

How Can Flood Models Help You Achieve Planning?

If you’re planning development within Flood Zone 2 or Flood Zone 3, you will be required to show that the site is safe from flooding over its lifetime and that there is no increased risk to others as a result of your development, as well as demonstrating that the site can be successfully developed. Using flood modelling, Aegaea can help you plan site layouts, attenuation, and flood mitigation measures that support these requirements.

Can You Use Flood Models For Site Due Diligence?

If you are considering purchasing a site, flood risk should be a key consideration.  Aegaea’s experts are highly proficient in building and analysing hydraulic models to ascertain existing and future flood risks for due diligence processes.

We review flood models, look at potential sources of risk, and look for opportunities to help you manage and eliminate future flood risk.

Through this assessment process, Aegaea is able to provide substantial added value to potential purchases by enabling customers to understand where potential value can be driven – uncovering these development opportunities that may not be obvious at first glance.

Can You Use Flood Models For Insurance and Property Risk?

Aegaea can successfully quantify risk to assets all over the UK and internationally. We use flood models to generate a depth of flooding estimates and cross reference this with the National Receptor Data and data from your site.

This can help you:

  • Understand how to help you keep your site flood-free.
  • Create flood management and flood evacuation plans.

  • Create a bespoke risk profile for any site in the UK.

Below is a local extract of categorised risk across a settlement in the UK.  Using hazard data calculated from flood modelling, we have successfully shown where the high risks are.
