What is a bespoke flood model?

A bespoke flood model is a hydraulic model tailored to assess risk specifically for your site. This may be required in areas where the existing hydraulic mode is at a strategic scale, and therefore unsuitable for assessing small sites, or where a hydraulic model of a nearby watercourse is not available. You may have been asked by the Local Planning Authority or the Environment Agency to undertake a hydraulic modelling exercise, or you may be looking for a pragmatic approach to mitigating risk and increasing development potential.

 

How bespoke flood models improve the value of your development

Understanding the flood risk to your site early in the project will enable you to maximise the development potential. Strategic scale models may overestimate flood risk as they may not include small scale topographical features that could protect your site from flood water. Early utilisation of a flood model can help prevent abortive work caused by flood extents being different than originally anticipated.

 

How can flood models help you achieve planning?

If you’re planning a development within flood zone 2 or flood zone 3, you will be required to show that the site is safe from flooding over it’s lifetime and there is no increased risk to others as a result of your development, as well as demonstrating that the site can be successfully developed.
