- Founded Aegaea in 2012
- In flood risk since 2007
- Registered World Bank consultant
- MSci, University of Bristol
I founded Aegaea in 2012 with a vision to create a team of experts dedicated to providing specialist flood risk and technical planning advice. Since graduating from the University of Bristol in 2007, I have worked across the water and environment sectors with the Environment Agency, major consultancies and private developers. My specialist subject is technical hydrology: flood modelling, climate resilience and the forecasting systems that tell people a flood is coming before it arrives.
My career has taken me from local UK planning projects to international development work with the World Bank, and I thrive on using technical hydrology to solve real-world problems that affect people’s lives. I am a registered consultant to the World Bank and I led the design of a national flood early warning system in Sri Lanka.
Building Aegaea
I set up Aegaea in 2012 to contract my expertise to other providers. Early on that included a major role on the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) in Turkey. For six years I worked as a specialist subcontractor to organisations of every size, until I was selected for the World Bank programme in Sri Lanka, where I spent nearly three years.
When I came back to the UK in 2020 I started work on the Oxford–Cambridge Arc, assessing flood risk for linear infrastructure. Daniel Cook then joined me, and together we turned Aegaea from a contracting business into a full consultancy. We have built a team of flood risk, hydraulic modelling, drainage and civil engineering specialists across England and Scotland, able to support projects from a single-house extension to a nationally significant infrastructure scheme. We also build our own digital tools, which help to drive the industry forward and challenge the previous ways of working. We’re proudly innovative, independent and forward-thinking practitioners, building capability for the future to reduce risks and improve safety in the UK and internationally.
How I can help you
- Technical expert oversight: senior-level direction for complex flood modelling and hydrology projects, ensuring consistent quality and methodology.
- Redefining flood risk on a site: national mapping is generic. Site-specific modelling built on better data frequently shows a different, and more accurate, picture that regulators will accept.
- Global climate resilience: as a registered consultant to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, I specialise in climate change adaptation and resilience planning at scale.
- Strategic portfolio analysis: helping large-scale land developers understand and mitigate climate impacts through detailed surface water and flood model development.
- Flood forecasting and early warning: designing and configuring flood forecasting systems that help governments and agencies prepare for extreme weather.
- Work outside the UK: Aegaea applies the same UK-standard rigour to international climate resilience and forecasting projects. I work across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions (I’ll work anywhere, I’m not fussy!).
Expertise in action
- National Hazard Mapping, Sri Lanka: Deputy Team Leader on a major World Bank project, ‘Climate Resilience Improvement Programme’, delivering hazard mapping for flood and drought for 75% of Sri Lanka.
- Climate Resilience Multiphase Assessment: I oversaw the initial stages of the MPA and helped undertake the design and review of its modernisation programme, training and development, first on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka and subsequently as a reviewer and Senior Hydrological Advisor to the World Bank.
- Major UK rail infrastructure: I lead a multi-company team of experts providing flood risk modelling and mapping for significant UK rail infrastructure.
- A national commercial property portfolio: for one of the UK’s largest commercial developers, I produced a comprehensive climate-impact analysis planning safe access, egress and refuge across their entire site list.
- The future of global hydrometry: I am a member of a global project team investigating the future of hydrometric observation networks, modernising how hydrological data is processed and visualised worldwide.
- Development of models and hydrological tools: co-founder of Hydrometric, and creator of CEFA (Catchment Ensemble Frequency Analysis), the Tiamat family of hydraulic models, and bespoke systems and software for consultancy and engineering.
A bit about me
My career included a brief sojourn into teaching, but my heart has always been in flood risk and water. Outside of work, I’m a technology enthusiast, poor golfer and all-round sport lover.
If you want to discuss a project or have questions about complex flood risks, technical development in hydrology, hydraulics or engineering, please feel free to reach out for a coffee and a chat!
